Local ABC Radio Presenter awarded Australia Day Citizen of the Year

The City of Port Lincoln Citizen of the Year Awards selection panel have come to a decision on the many deserving nominations received from the community with Council proudly announcing that the winners of the 2020 Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards are:

Citizen of the Year
Emma Pedler

Young Citizen of the Year
Tyrene Gardiner

Community Event of the Year
Passionis Productions

Councillor Jack Ritchie on behalf of the selection panel this year said “That there was unanimous agreement that the standout person for Citizen of the Year was Emma Pedler for her incredible contribution to the community through her work, her volunteer commitment and all of her activities, the impact of her contribution on the local government area and as an inspirational role model”.

Emma Pedler volunteers much of her time to help out in her community to compere at events and fundraise as part of “The Runaway Brides” team for SA Variety, the Children’s Charity and has participated in the Variety Bash on multiple occasions.  She is a leader of a team of volunteers who provide meals for Fred’s Van on Sunday nights as part of the organisation run by the St Vincent de Paul Society.  The nominator said “Emma is energetic, compassionate and accepting of all people, regardless of age, race and demographic and is respectful, warm and an example for all.  She is encouraging of others to be their best and celebrates their successes with gusto.  She also shows amazing compassion and will be the first person to sit with her arm around someone who is struggling”.

The Young Citizen of the Year, Tyrene Gardiner was rewarded for his contribution and dedication as a St John Cadet. Tyrene is a member of both the Cadet and Adult St John Division.  He is a great mentor to new and junior cadet members and has recorded 296 duty hours in June 2019 providing first aid skills to the general public.  He volunteers his time to attend public events to provide first aid care and is also a trainer with the Tasman Football Club, junior boundary umpire mentor and umpires games in the Port Lincoln Football League. Tyrene has fundraised to assist homeless people in his home town and for the purchase of a public access AED (defibrillator), which he donated to the Drakes Supermarket in Port Lincoln.

Passionis Productions took out the Community Event of the Year and in particular were recognised for their outstanding contribution to young people.  The Passionis Productions leadership team volunteer their time to teach writing, acting, film making and art four nights a week for free to those who want to attend. They also facilitate both Adult and Youth Mental Health Support Groups, as well as The Youth Advisory Group and work closely with West Coast Youth to support Youth in need on the Eyre Peninsula.

Mayor Brad Flaherty said, “It was great to see more people nominating their valued community members this year.  Those that were nominated were all deserving winners and should be proud of themselves and the service they provide to their community”.

The community are invited to congratulate and celebrate the winners of those nominated at the Australia Day event on the Port Lincoln foreshore to be held on Sunday 26 January 2020.

As part of the Australia Day celebrations there will be an Australian Citizenship ceremony to welcome a number of new citizens to our country and community.
