The theme for Anti-Poverty Week 2026 focuses on raising awareness of poverty and the challenges faced by vulnerable populations across Australia, including Port Lincoln and surrounding areas. Anti-Poverty Week is a nationwide initiative that encourages communities to shine a spotlight on the realities of poverty and work together to identify practical solutions to reduce its impact.
A free event will be held at Dickens Park on Thursday 22 October from 11:30am to 1:30pm. This annual event brings together local community organisations to share information, resources, and support to those experiencing hardship.
The event aims to inspire change, encourage community action and foster a more equitable society by highlighting the social and economic barriers experienced by many Australians. Poverty remains a significant issue worldwide with more than 3.32 million Australians, representing 13.4% of the population, living below the poverty line. This includes approximately one in six children, underscoring the importance of community awareness and support.
Organisers encourage people to attend, learn more about the services available in the region, and engage in conversations about how poverty can be reduced through individual and collective action as well as community support.
