City of Port Lincoln secures $600,000 grant for Verran Terrace renewal
The City of Port Lincoln has secured $600,000 in government funding for the first stage of renewal of Verran Terrace, helping to deliver safer, smoother and more reliable travel for residents, visitors, businesses and freight operators.
The funding, awarded through South Australia’s 2026/27 Special Local Roads Program, will support a $900,000 first stage of roadworks comprising approximately 300 metres between Windsor Avenue and Anne Street, with Council contributing a further $300,000 towards the project.
This renewal will support the long-term reliability of our local transport network by improving our capacity to safely accommodate increasing traffic demands and heavy vehicle movements. The project marks the first stage of Council’s seven-year plan to progressively renew Verran Terrace, funding dependent.
Mayor Diana Mislov said “This funding is an important outcome for Port Lincoln and a substantial investment in the safety and long-term performance of one of our city’s most strategically significant transport corridors.”
“The Special Local Roads Program is especially valuable for regional communities because it enables us to undertake significant road projects that support regional freight, industry and community access but would be difficult to fund from local rates alone.”
“Council sincerely thanks the Australian Government and the Hon Kristy McBain MP, Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, for approving this Commonwealth funding.
“We also acknowledge the Hon Rhiannon Pearce MP, South Australian Minister for Local Government, the South Australian Local Government Grants Commission, the Local Government Association of South Australia, the Local Government Transport Advisory Panel and the Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association for their respective roles in the regional prioritisation, assessment, recommendation and administration of the program.”
“Securing this first stage is an important milestone in Council's long-term plan for Verran Terrace, and we will continue advocating for future investment in the corridor.”
City of Port Lincoln Chief Executive Officer Eric Brown said “This successful application is a reflection of our investment in strategic planning and the considerable work undertaken by our team.”
“Council has recently completed a city-wide assessment of its strategic and high-use roads, giving us a clear understanding of local infrastructure priorities and placing us in a much stronger position to prepare competitive, evidence-based funding applications for community benefit.”
The most recent grant follows the City of Port Lincoln securing $453,000 at the beginning of the year, through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, for the intersection of Verran Terrace, Luke Street, Le Brun Street and St Andrews Terrace. That project is expected to deliver a roundabout, pedestrian crossing, lighting, line-marking and other road-safety improvements.
Together, these two projects represent over a million dollars in external funding secured by Council to improve safety, connectivity and the long-term condition of infrastructure along the Verran Terrace corridor.
Council will provide further information about project timing and construction arrangements as planning progresses.
