City of Port Lincoln upgrades CCTV network to boost community safety

Published 13th May 2026

The City of Port Lincoln is pleased to announce the commencement of a significant renewal and expansion of its public Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) network, delivering improved safety outcomes for the Port Lincoln community as part of Council’s 2025/2026 capital works program.

The project will deliver modern, high-resolution camera technology across key public areas throughout the city. The upgrade replaces ageing infrastructure that has reached end-of-life, restoring reliable coverage and significantly improving the evidentiary quality of footage available to support public safety and law enforcement.

The renewal project includes:

  • replacement of ageing cameras with modern, high-resolution equipment;
  • full replacement of networking and communications infrastructure;
  • implementation of a new industry-standard Video Management Software (VMS) platform; and
  • expansion of CCTV coverage into additional public areas, including the Yacht Club precinct, Washington Street and the Bligh Street public amenities.

The upgraded system has been designed with future scalability in mind, allowing for the integration of additional cameras and infrastructure as further funding opportunities arise.

Mayor Diana Mislov said, “The upgrade will strengthen safety across our key public spaces.  The upgrade will give our community greater confidence that key public spaces are being monitored with modern, reliable technology.”

“The CCTV network plays an important role in supporting safer public spaces for residents and visitors, while also helping deter antisocial behaviour and providing reassurance to the community.”

The project has been delivered in close collaboration with South Australia Police (SAPOL), who were consulted throughout the planning process to ensure camera placements provide maximum public safety and investigative benefit. A new dedicated viewing station will also be established at the Port Lincoln SAPOL Station, providing law enforcement with direct access to real-time CCTV footage to support community safety and rapid response to incidents.

In conjunction with the network renewal, Council has developed a new Closed-Circuit Television Policy to provide a clear and transparent framework for the operation of Council’s surveillance systems. The policy addresses system governance, privacy protections, data management, access controls and Council’s ongoing partnership with SAPOL.

The draft policy is scheduled to be considered by Council at its 18 May meeting, and, if adopted as a policy of Council, will be made publicly available on Council’s website via the Council Policies page.
