Council seeks Expressions of Interest for commercial-scale licensed composting facility on Lower Eyre Peninsula
The City of Port Lincoln has released an Expression of Interest inviting stakeholders from established composting operators and local businesses to collaborate on the development of a local composting facility for the Port Lincoln and lower Eyre Peninsula region. The Expression of Interest process will run from Wednesday 16 October to 10am on Thursday 14 November 2024.
This week, Council adopted its Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2025-2034 and Waste and Resources Management Strategy 2025-2029, which outline actionable objectives focused on reducing carbon emissions and diverting organic waste from landfill. A key component of these strategies is the rollout of the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service across the entire Port Lincoln community. The current FOGO Pilot Program, introduced in March this year to 400 households, has shown positive results from kerbside collection. These results have created momentum for establishing a local composting facility, which is now seen as a critical step in expanding the service and building a local circular economy.
The Council is keen to hear from local businesses interested in hosting such a facility, as well as from commercial composting operators from across South Australia. Currently, the region lacks a commercial-scale licensed composting facility, meaning organic waste would need to be freighted long distances for processing. The Expression of Interest aims to identify current market capabilities across various operational functions, including but not limited to, receiving and processing organic materials, haulage services, grinding, composting and providing site premises.
The Council also welcomes innovate technology solutions or business models that could enhance processing efficiency or create additional value from organic waste streams.
Mayor Diana Mislov said, “Council is committed to reducing waste, lowering carbon emissions, and fostering a circular economy in our region. By diverting organics from landfill and establishing a local composting facility, we aim to significantly reduce waste disposal costs while creating local jobs and contributing to environmental sustainability across the Eyre Peninsula. A local composting facility will play a key role in enabling this transformation, providing an efficient and sustainable solution for processing food and garden waste. We encourage all interested parties to submit their interest and help us bring this vision to life.”
