HMAS Eyre to be welcomed with historic Freedom of Entry parade

Published 16th October 2026

Port Lincoln residents are encouraged to line Tasman Terrace and be part of an historic civic celebration when HMAS Eyre’s Ship’s Company marches through the city as part of a Freedom of Entry Parade on Saturday, 24 October 2026.

The Freedom of Entry Parade will be a highlight of HMAS Eyre’s visit to Port Lincoln, with the ship arriving on Thursday, 22 October and departing on Sunday, 25 October 2026.

Commemorating 125 years of Naval service, the event will bring together Navy personnel, veterans and the local community for a day of ceremony, tradition and celebration.

The public is invited to gather from 11am to witness the ceremonial parade, which will commence at the corner of Eyre Street and Tasman Terrace before proceeding along Tasman Terrace to the formal Granting of Entry ceremony. The parade will conclude on the foreshore lawns near the Port Lincoln Playspace, where official speeches will mark the occasion.

Mayor Diana Mislov said, “This will be a proud occasion for our city as we welcome HMAS Eyre and its Ship’s Company to Port Lincoln.”

“Freedom of Entry is a significant civic honour and a tradition that reflects the strong relationship between the Royal Australian Navy and our community.”

“We encourage everyone to come along, line Tasman Terrace and be part of this special occasion.  Opportunities to witness a Freedom of Entry Parade are rare, and it will be a memorable day for our community.”

“It is also an opportunity to show our appreciation for the men and women who serve our nation and to celebrate the connection between HMAS Eyre and our city.”

One of the oldest customs in military history, Freedom of Entry symbolises the trust and respect between a military unit and the community it serves.   The honour grants a military unit the privilege of marching through a city with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed.

The parade will feature HMAS Eyre’s Ship’s Company marching in ceremonial uniform with swords drawn, accompanied by the Royal Australian Navy band, creating a vibrant display of naval tradition, ceremony and pageantry.

Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend and experience this unique occasion while showing their support for HMAS Eyre and the Royal Australian Navy.

Following the ceremony, community members are warmly invited to continue the celebrations at the Port Lincoln RSL, where they can meet HMAS Eyre’s Ship’s Company, enjoy a sausage sizzle and connect with Navy personnel.
