Major Port Lincoln Housing project milestone reached with approval of 107-home residential development

Published 15th May 2026

The City of Port Lincoln has welcomed approval of a 107‑home residential development across Council-owned land at Monalena Street, Passat Street and Mitton Avenue, marking a major milestone in a housing project being delivered by Council in partnership with Cornerstone Housing, a not-for-profit community housing provider.

Cornerstone Housing was appointed through a competitive, publicly advertised Expression of Interest process that was open to all developers.

Approved through the independent Eyre Peninsula Regional Assessment Panel, the project will support increased housing supply and affordability while responding to ongoing housing and workforce pressures in the city.

Mayor Diana Mislov said, “The approval has reflected Council’s long‑term focus on addressing housing needs and planning for Port Lincoln’s future.”

“Housing is one of the biggest challenges facing our community, and this approval is a major step forward.”

“This project shows what can be achieved when strategic planning, strong partnerships and good decision-making come together.  Council has been very deliberate in how we use our land to support housing supply and liveability.”

“This development will help create more opportunities for local families, workers and businesses.”

City of Port Lincoln Chief Executive Officer Eric Brown said, “Port Lincoln typically delivers around 40 new homes each year.  A 107‑home development represents around 2.7 years’ worth of typical housing supply, making this a very significant outcome for our community.”

“This housing project aligns with Council’s Housing Strategy 2024–2029 and Strategic Directions Plan and forms part of a broader, coordinated approach to increasing housing availability and supporting workforce attraction and attention.”

“This approval forms part of a broader Council-led housing program, with the residential land development Master Plan recently adopted and the associated Code Amendment process now underway."

“Together, these initiatives provide a clear pathway to increase housing supply over the short, medium and longer term,” said Mr Brown.

The approved development includes 42 allotments at Mitton Avenue and 65 allotments across Monalena and Passat Street.

Council and its development partner are now awaiting the outcome of a current grant funding application, which, if successful, would help support delivery and turn the approval into new homes for Port Lincoln.

Mayor Mislov said, “Council will continue advocating for housing investment and supporting infrastructure.  This is an important milestone, but our work continues.”

“We will keep working with our partners to secure the funding and infrastructure needed to turn approvals into homes.”

The project also includes important environmental offsets.  Approximately three (3) hectares of native vegetation will be cleared as part of the development, with offset works proposed across approximately 36 hectares at Mikkira Station, supporting its ongoing role as an important koala sanctuary and biodiversity area.

The approval complements other Council‑led and Council‑supported projects underway in Port Lincoln, including the delivery of two new childcare centres – one 100-place centre and one 80-place centre.

Council acknowledges the work of Cornerstone Housing, Burke Urban, Ben Green & Associates, Fyfe, Greening Australia and City of Port Lincoln staff in progressing the project.

The City of Port Lincoln will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
