Supporting One Another Through Grief, Growth, and Community Spirit

In recent Months, our community has faced an extraordinary wave of grief. We have said goodbye to several local pioneers and treasured identities - people whose stories are woven into the very fabric of our city. Their contributions, whether through fishing, sport, culture, or quiet acts of service, have shaped the community we love. Alongside these profound losses, we have also experienced the deep shock and sorrow of a violent and senseless act that has shaken our sense of safety and unity.

Grief touches us all in different ways. Some carry it quietly, while others come together to share memories and find strength in numbers. During Times like these, the importance of community wellbeing cannot be overstated. Connection, compassion, and care are the anchors that hold us steady through uncertainty and loss.

One of the most powerful ways we see that care in action is through our volunteers. From emergency responders to those who give their time in Council facilities like the Nautilus Arts Centre, to sporting clubs, community events, or care services - our volunteers are the quiet force behind so much good. Their work uplifts us all, particularly in times when our community needs extra support.

Council has recently released its Volunteer Management Plan 2025-2030 for community consultation. We encourage residents to take the time to read and provide feedback on this important plan. Your insights will help us shape how we support and grow our volunteer network - ensuring we continue to build a resilient and connected community together.

On recently attending the opening of a time capsule, buried almost 50 years ago, as a Lions Club Project, I think of those by-gone decades, and the resilience from clubs formed and still going many years later. To open the treasures and historical messages from then Mayor Geoffrey Davey to a Mayor 50 years into the future, was exciting. It gives pause for reflection, on what legacy each of us, will leave for future generations,

Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks and admiration to the many residents who participated in our recent Revocation of Community Land consultation and drop-in-sessions. Your presence, passion, and thoughtful contributions helped guide Council's decisions and demonstrated just how deeply our parks, reserves, and shared spaces matter. In moments of difficulty, it is this kind of unity, care for place, and commitment to each other that makes me so proud to serve as your mayor.

Let us continue to look out for one another, celebrate what makes us strong, and walk forward together - with purpose, empathy, and pride in our community.
