New Communication Boards enhance inclusion across Port Lincoln community spaces
The City of Port Lincoln has installed new communication boards at the Port Lincoln Library and the Port Lincoln Leisure Centre, making community spaces more accessible and welcoming for people of all ages and abilities.
Developed using templates provided by Stone Speech Pathology and customised in collaboration with the Port Lincoln Special School, the boards feature clear, location-specific visuals and key communication symbols to support everyday interactions.
Students from the Port Lincoln Special School played a key role in the project, working with Council to help design the aided language boards. They collaborated with their peers to identify preferred layouts and suggested words and symbols relevant to each location.
Their contributions helped ensure the boards are practical, meaningful and accessible for a wide range of users, supporting communication for people who experience communication barriers, including children and people with disability.
By providing visual supports in key community locations, the initiative encourages greater independence, confidence and participation in everyday activities.
Mayor Diana Mislov said, “This project is a fantastic example of collaboration between Council and the Port Lincoln Special School. The students played an important role in shaping these boards, helping to ensure they are practical, meaningful and accessible. We sincerely thank them for their input and expertise.”
“By making communication easier, these boards will help more people confidently engage with and enjoy the Library and Leisure Centre. We are proud to support a more inclusive and welcoming Port Lincoln through this initiative."
The communication boards are now available at the Port Lincoln Library and Port Lincoln Leisure Centre during opening hours.
