New community pontoon construction begins at Lincoln Cove Marina
The City of Port Lincoln is pleased to announce that construction has begun this week on a new multi-user community pontoon at Lincoln Cove Marina, delivering an important upgrade to local marine infrastructure.
The project is funded by $700,000 from the South Australian Government through the Thriving Regions Fund – Enabling Infrastructure Program, administered by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA), with Council contributing a further $350,000. The program supports infrastructure projects that strengthens regional communities and supports long-term economic growth. Council thanks the South Australian Government for its support and partnership in delivering this important project for the community.
Located near the Port Lincoln Marina Hotel and adjacent to the boat ramp, the new 60-metre pontoon has been designed to support short-term recreational berthing, making it easier for boat users to safely embark and disembark passengers. The improved infrastructure will accommodate a broader range of vessels, including larger recreational and tourism craft, responding to growing demand for accessible and functional marine facilities within the marina precinct.
Mayor Diana Mislov said “The new pontoon will provide long-term benefits for both the local community and visitors.”
“This project is an important investment in our marina and supports both our local boating community and growing visitor economy.”
“The new community pontoon will enhance the visitor experience and deliver real benefits for our local tourism operators and marine-based businesses.”
The project is identified as a key strategic action in the Marina Refresh Strategy within the Port Lincoln Precincts Master Plan – CBD, Foreshore, Marina, and aligns with regional economic priorities to support business growth and tourism across the Eyre Peninsula.
As part of the works, the existing small pontoon will be permanently removed commencing 2 June 2026. Regular users are encouraged to plan ahead and make alternative arrangements from this date.
Construction will begin shortly after removal of the existing pontoon and is expected to be completed between late June and early July 2026, subject to weather and site conditions. During this time, the community may notice increased activity within the marina area, including the establishment of a temporary construction compound near the boat ramp, crane operations to move materials, and the use of a barge to undertake offshore works. Works will also take place along the seawall near the Marina Hotel to install new connections for the pontoon’s dual gangways.
While every effort will be made to minimise disruption, there may be temporary impacts to traffic flow and boat ramp access during construction. Council appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation while these essential improvements are delivered.
Once complete, the new pontoon will increase capacity for recreational vessels, improve safety by reducing congestion around existing infrastructure, and enhance access to one of Port Lincoln’s key waterfront destinations, supporting continued growth in the region’s marine tourism sector.
