State Government Funding to deliver upgrades to Port Lincoln Foreshore
The City of Port Lincoln has welcomed $438,892 in funding from the Government of South Australia’s Algal Bloom Response Local Government Grant Fund, supporting two significant projects that will renew and enhance the city’s iconic foreshore.
The funding is part of the State Government’s commitment to supporting coastal communities across South Australia that have experienced significant impacts due to the harmful algal bloom. Through the Algal Bloom Summer Plan and associated recovery measures, the State and Federal Governments are investing in initiatives that strengthen local economies, rebuild visitor confidence and enhance community infrastructure, including a $4 million Local Government Grant Fund.
As part of this investment, Council has received $388,948 for a Boardwalk Renewal Project and $49,944 for a Foreshore Furniture Project, both located along Tasman Terrace and forming part of Council’s broader efforts to improve public spaces, support local businesses and encourage visitation.
Mayor Diana Mislov said, “Council is grateful for the State Government’s investment in infrastructure that would deliver long‑term benefits for the community. This funding allows Council to make important upgrades to one of Port Lincoln’s most well‑used and well‑loved areas. We sincerely thank the Government of South Australia for supporting projects that improve safety, accessibility and the overall visitor experience.”
The Boardwalk Renewal Project will renew the deck which runs under the historic fig trees along Tasman Terrace overlooking Boston Bay and is used daily by walkers, families and visitors. Built in 2009, the existing boardwalk has been exposed to harsh coastal conditions for more than 15 years, with recent assessments identifying warped decking, compromised structural elements and sections that no longer meet current Australian Standards.
The renewal will involve replacing the existing timber decking with a fibre reinforced plastic surface, which offers greater durability and an expected design life of up to 50 years. Structural repairs will also be undertaken, including the replacement of damaged bearers, restoration of corroded steelwork and erosion control works around footings. Importantly, the upgrade will improve accessibility by delivering a smoother, more even surface that supports people of all abilities.
Construction is expected to commence in September 2026, with works scheduled for completion by end of year, subject to weather and material availability.
Complementing the boardwalk works, the Foreshore Furniture Project will refresh outdoor seating and dining areas along Tasman Terrace, improving comfort and amenity for residents and visitors. Much of the existing furniture is more than 40 years old and has deteriorated due to prolonged exposure to the coastal environment, giving parts of the foreshore a dated appearance.
The project will see the installation of new, corrosion‑resistant table and bench settings, along with the replacement of several deteriorated concrete slabs. These upgrades are designed to create more inviting spaces for people to relax, socialise and enjoy the foreshore, while also supporting surrounding cafes and businesses by encouraging people to stay longer in the precinct.
Installation of the new furniture is expected to take place from September and completed by end of year.
Both projects support Council’s commitment to revitalising the foreshore following impacts associated with the harmful algal bloom, which has affected visitor confidence across the region. By investing in safer, more attractive and accessible public spaces, Council aims to encourage residents to rediscover the foreshore and provide visitors with renewed confidence to enjoy Port Lincoln’s coastline and local businesses.
“Our foreshore is the heart of Port Lincoln. These projects will help strengthen that connection, support local trade and ensure these spaces can be enjoyed by the community and visitors for many years to come,” said Mayor Mislov.
