Strategy for Ageing well adopted by Council
The City of Port Lincoln has adopted its first strategy to respond to the needs and challenges of its ageing residents. Empowering our elders: A Strategy for Living and Ageing Well in Port Lincoln presents a snapshot of the current landscape for ageing well locally, how Council currently empowers older people to live well, and a plan for new actions it will take over the coming 5 years.
Mayor Diana Mislov thanked the Port Lincoln community for their engagement in consultation processes for developing the strategy. She said early consultation focus groups involved 8 health and ageing sector stakeholders, 6 housing and strategic sector stakeholders, 15 community members with lived experience, 13 community and service organisation representatives, and 4 Aboriginal owned organisation stakeholders and community members.
During an official period of public consultation in March/April, 9 submissions of specific feedback were received from community members, and carefully considered in finalisation of the strategy.
“As a Council, we realise the importance of living well throughout the ages and stages of life,” Mayor Mislov said.
“We are committed to listening to community members and working with them to meet their evolving needs. This strategy will allow us to focus on many of the different aspects and experiences that support a person to be able to live and age well in their community.”
Visiting Port Lincoln earlier in May, Hon. Nat Cook MP, Minister for Seniors and Ageing Well met with the City of Port Lincoln and some community members who had been involved with the project. She congratulated them on the strategy development, its research, and its alignment to the South Australian Plan for Ageing Well. Minister Cook said plans like Port Lincoln’s were a great indicator of ageing well in the regions and would help to inform development of further State plans.
The development of the Empowering our elders Strategy was made possible through the “Empowering Our Elders Empowers Our Community” 12-month project, funded by a $40,000 Age Friendly SA Grant from the Office for Ageing Well, SA Health.
