Targeted Rabbit Calicivirus release to help control wild rabbits

Published 12th March 2025

The City of Port Lincoln, in partnership with Landscape South Australia – Eyre Peninsula, will be undertaking a controlled autumnal release of Rabbit Calicivirus Disease (RHDV-K5) starting Friday 28 March 2025 to help manage wild rabbit populations in key reserves.  The release will take place over several weeks at:

  • Puckridge Park
  • Bernard Place Reserve
  • Gawler Terrace
  • Poole Oval

The virus, distributed via treated oats, is specific to European rabbits and does not affect other animal species. Pet rabbit owners who are concerned about their animal's safety are encouraged to speak with their veterinarian about vaccination, if their rabbit is not already protected.

In the lead-up to the release, pre-feed (non-poisonous oats) will be laid in the targeted areas to help ensure the effectiveness of the program, with the first treated baits to be laid scheduled for Friday, 28 March 2025.

Wild rabbits can cause significant environmental damage, including soil erosion and loss of native vegetation.   Signage will be installed at key entry points to these locations to notify the community.

For more information, or if you come across a deceased rabbit, please contact the Council Office on 8621 2300 or email us at plcc@plcc.sa.gov.au.
