The Poppy Project: A Community Tribute

Published 11th November 2024

What began as a heartfelt concept by a small group of local artists has blossomed into the deeply meaningful community-driven Poppy Project — a tribute and expression of respect to the service men and women of Eyre Peninsula.

Over the past several months, local community members have come together to create beautiful ceramic poppies, representing the enduring legacy of those who have served. Led by local artist Julie Aldridge, the ceramic poppies have been meticulously crafted by artists, community members, alongside students from Navigator College and St. Joseph's School. The project also saw the involvement of the Textile and Quilters Group, under the guidance of Nola Samuel, who have created stunning textile poppies in a beautiful expression of community unity.

The handmade poppies will be installed at the Eyre Park War Memorial for the 2024 Remembrance Day Service next week, with the assistance of the local Port Lincoln High School Clontarf Foundation. The installation will serve as a powerful visual tribute to the deep respect and admiration the community holds for our veterans and the Port Lincoln Returned Services League (RSL).

The RSL invites the community to attend the Remembrance Day Service, which will commence at 10:30 am at the Eyre Park memorial on Monday 11 November 2024.

Mayor Diana Mislov said “the community's passion for the project is a testament to the ongoing support of the RSL, who continue their tireless efforts in supporting returned servicemen and women and honouring the fallen.

The ‘Poppy Project’ has been made possible by the support of the City of Port Lincoln, Country Arts SA, Julie Aldridge, Nola Samuel, and the enthusiastic contributions of local schools, artists, and community members. A heartfelt thank you goes to all those who have contributed their time, talent, and energy to this meaningful tribute”.

Lest We Forget.
