Temporary closure of Town Jetty Swimming Enclosure for Stage Two Repairs

Published 15th March 2024

Southern Ocean Diving and Marine is set to commence Stage Two repair works on the Port Lincoln Town Jetty Swimming Enclosure, starting March 18 and concluding by March 28, 2024.  The scheduled repairs involve redriving nine loose piles and installing five new piles to further enhance the structural stability of the swimming enclosure.

Stage One, completed in November 2023, addressed pontoon repairs and introduced a new hinge joint, significantly reducing the risk of damage from strong northerly winds and storms where the structural framing had failed.  Two new predator nets were purchased and one of the nets was installed.

Mayor Diana Mislov said, “Council acknowledges the vital role the swimming enclosure plays in the community and understand there may be community frustration at its temporary closure, particularly given the recent unseasonably hot weather.  Recognising the significance of this facility, Stage Two of the works was put on hold late last year to allow the swimming enclosure to remain open and accessible to residents and visitors over the summer holiday period. We acknowledge that there is never an ideal time for such closures, given the enclosure’s year-round usage, however the contractor has been engaged and is available to complete these works at this time.  The safety of our swimmers is paramount, and for this reason, swimmers will not be able to use the facility during these two weeks of repair works, expected to be completed prior to the Easter long weekend.”

“These piling works are expected to substantially reduce the likelihood of further damage to the structure resulting from typical waves from the north, ensuring the long-term safety and enjoyment of our swimming enclosure, said Mayor Mislov.”

As part of the Stage Two works, the predator net installed in November 2023 with be rotated with the second predator net purchased last year.  This rotation will allow the current net to be cleaned and maintained, preventing the accumulation of marine growth that could compromise the system’s performance.

“We anticipate that the completion of the Stage Two repairs will further enhance the swimming enclosure’s resilience and safety,” said Mayor Mislov.
